When I started college, this is when I realized that computer science is NOT just programming. Because of this, I was pretty sure that my college major would be Computer Science. So throughout middle school and high school, I would always be programming.
I didn't learn the difference that programming is just applying the theoretical ideas in computer science until much later on. And I intentionally used the word "programming" rather than "computer science", because they are different things. To back track a little bit, I've always been interested in programming as a kid. Because of this, I've always put off learning calculus in high school because I was scared of the subject matter. It also didn't help that calculus generally had a reputation of being a "difficult subject". The notation that one sees calculus also made it seem so foreign to me. The idea of calculus seemed daunting to me in high school because of the horror stories I've heard from my friends. There’s low supply because a CS degree is not easy. The reason why is because there’s low supply (less so for game developers) and high demand of programmers. Almost all of these people quickly drop out when they find out it’s not easy, and that contributes to the high dropout rate.ĬS grads get paid a lot.

Many people who do not excel in high school choose to go to college for CS because they play PC video games and want to be a video game developer. It’s also important to note that CS is a tough STEM major. If you make it past the first semester of your sophomore year, you are capable of finishing the rest of the degree, and the dropout rates sharply decline after then. People who have had calculus and physics in high school are much less likely to drop out compared to students who have only had pre-calc and no or little high school physics. “Physics for Scientist and Engineers with Modern Physics Serway Jewett, ninth edition” Is the textbook most Universities use. The other freshman classes for Computer Science are usually fairly easy, but many people struggle with Physics. Secondly, If you don’t want to be one of the people who drop out in Computer Science, you need to go on ahead and start learning Calc 1 (AP Calc AB on Khan Academy), and retake calc 1 again in college. Only the tough stuff gets upvoted because people think it’s interesting. First, the calculus you see here is tough calculus often going up to Calc 4.
